Nouns and Pronouns


NOUNS:
1. Be able to identify the nouns in a sentence! Remember: Nouns are a person, place, thing, idea (or concept, such as a religion or belief), or emotion.

Helpful Noun Suffixes:
-ion (i.e. confusion, compassion, expedition, competition)
-ness (i.e. happiness, loneliness, tenderness, vagueness)
-ist (this is used for a kind of person, i.e. dentist, artist, chemist, clarinetist)

Helpful noun hint: if you can put a, an, the, or my/your/our in front of a word it is a noun!
It is an honor to help you.
My decision is final.
Your anger is obvious.

2. Be able to identify proper and common nouns and punctuate each correctly.

Common nouns: not capitalized! General nouns, such as ocean, street, car, shoe, children
SEASONS: are considered common nouns- not capitalized, such as winter, spring, summer, fall.
Subjects: general subjects are NOT capitalized, such as math, science, social studies.

Proper nouns are SPECIFIC NOUNS, languages, brand-names, or titles which are capitalized, such as Uncle Bill, Spanish rice, Nike, Dr. Smith, Spring Street

Subjects: A specific class like The Chemistry of Painting or History of the Civil War is capitalized. ALSO, all classes that are languages are capitalized, such as English, Spanish, French, etc.

PRONOUNS:
